The Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory
(VIDRL) is the state's largest public health reference laboratory
with core responsibilities in virology and mycobacteriology. VIDRL
also provides expertise in bacteriology, parasitology, epidemiology
and molecular detection technologies. VIDRL has state,
national and international
roles.
Services provided by VIDRL at the state level include:
- laboratory capacity for infectious diseases outbreak investigations
by the Department of Human Services, Victoria
- infectious disease surveillance
- diagnostic pathology for the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre
and other sexual health clinics
- reference laboratory testing
- quality assurance testing and analysis
- applied public health research

- managed reference collections
- expert advice in major program areas
- advanced teaching and training in microbiology
